Fly Fishing Idaho's Big Wood River in March [Episode #45]
This episode shows us fly fishing for trout, using nymphs and streamers to catch and release gorgeous Rainbows and Browns. It is a cold but clear and sunny March day in a winter with lots of snow as can be seen from the banks of snow next to the river. We start the day with nymphs like a black Pat's Rubber Legs and a small red Midge pupae pattern. Those nymphs work most of the day, but we also start using, in the afternoon, an olive Wooly bugger with a gold bead head which does very well throughout the rest of the day as well. We get flies and advice from the local Picabo Angler (www.picaboangler.net/) in Picabo, Idaho.

Fly Fishing with Ladin's primary purpose is to share fly fishing techniques and places to fly fish in the Western United States. We are a dedicated fly fishing UA-cam channel promoting catch and release fly fishing. Our motto is having fun catching and releasing fish. We want to share our passion with others. We are not professionals. We are passionate about fly fishing but we do not take ourselves to seriously. We show our mistakes, falling in, getting flies stuck in wrong places, loosing fish. The same things that all of us experience fly fishing. We have been fly fishing northwest waters for over forty years. But we are always learning new things that we like to pass along. We think our channel is a great place to get ideas for fly fishing vacations and weekend trips.

Rock Creek is for all intents and purposes ruined...as I grew up in the Missoula area I was able to fish it on nearly a weekly basis for much of the 1960's through the 1980's...that said, it was not uncommon to catch both browns and rainbows in the 16" to 18" range with one going over 22" once in awhile...there was also a population of bull trout which were fairly common especially on the upper reaches...my Dad and brothers were aware that this was a special place and behaved accordingly--we did keep fish on occasion but the goal was not to catch the 10 trout limit that was available then...many rivers and streams have suffered and will continue to suffer from too much pressure from both locals, visitors and naturally guides and outfitters...at any rate, I have lived on the Yellowstone River for the past 20 years and have seen the pressure increase every year...the Paradise Valley has been popular with outfitters for many years now and as the quality of the fishing has declined they have moved down river...15 years ago the access points on the Yellowstone between Livingston and Big Timber could get busy but generally they were pretty quite...now, from what I understand FWP is looking to expand parking on this section of the river to accommodate the demand which in turn will further degrade the fishery...bottom line is that there is too much pressure for the fishery to remain what it was...to many people (read that as guiders and outfitters) working to make a living off of a publicly held resource with the managers of that resource (FWP) under a huge amount of pressure to accommodate the demands of the apparently the governors office and the MT Outfitters Association...management of the resource based on science went out the window along time ago...
